We just passed the 500 mile mark today, completing the factory recommended break-in period. The odometer clicked past 500 on the way down to the local dealership, San Diego Harley-Davidson, where I bought my Sportster XL1200 Custom. A fitting destination for the event made even more momentous as I was heading down to buy Mickey our brindle boxer (named after the Irish boxer in Snatch) a birthday gift.

how can you keep an engine below 4000 or 5000 rpm when there's no information relating rpm to speed in various gears. Posting break-in shift speeds is very different than posting max speeds per gear. what speed corresponds to 4k rpm in 5th? Likewise, what speed corresponds to 5k rpm in 5th?

Listen to the engine. You can hear if you're lugging it or making it scream. Keep it in the "purring" range. Not very scientific, but you don't really need to be.
